Job description

  • Designing and building scalable data pipelines and ETL workflows to ingest, transform and serve data reliably
  • Collaborating with data analysts, stakeholders and platform teams to gather data requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions
  • Implementing data quality checks, validation frameworks and monitoring to ensure data integrity and pipeline reliability
  • Optimising data warehouse performance, query efficiency and cost-effectiveness across cloud infrastructure
  • Maintaining CI/CD practices, version control and infrastructure-as-code tooling to ensure deployment stability
  • Troubleshooting data flow issues, bottlenecks and performance degradation across distributed systems
  • Contributing to documentation, architecture decisions and knowledge-sharing within the data team, Most roles of this type offer the following, dependent on the industry and seniority of the role:

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on data engineering experience, including pipeline design, ETL development and data warehouse optimisation
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with at least one cloud data platform (Azure, AWS or Google Cloud)
  • Solid understanding of data modelling, data quality principles and pipeline orchestration
  • Experience with one or more of: Python, Java, .NET or similar languages for data processing
  • Familiarity with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD tooling
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Authorisation to work in the United Kingdom

Nice-to-have

  • Master’s degree or Google Cloud Data Engineer certification
  • Experience with distributed systems architecture or microservices
  • Exposure to tools such as Apache Spark, Airflow, Kafka or similar streaming/orchestration platforms
  • Knowledge of Power BI, Terraform or infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Agile working practices and experience supporting analytics or BI initiatives

Benefits & conditions

Roles of this type may sit within engineering or analytics-focused teams where data infrastructure is central to organisational capability. The work could involve collaborating with data analysts, platform engineers and business stakeholders to design robust pipelines, ensure data quality and unlock insights that drive decision-making. You could be working on contract terms at £500-650 per day, based in Birmingham, West Midlands, with exposure to cloud platforms, modern CI/CD practices and distributed systems thinking.
